National Institute of Open Schooling: The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was established in November 1989 by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the Government of India in November 1989 in pursuance of the 1986 National Policy on Education.


NIOS offers a number of vocational, life-enhancing, and community-oriented courses in addition to general and academic courses at the secondary and senior secondary levels. It also offers Elementary level Courses through its Open Basic Education Programs (OBE).

The Government of India, through Gazette Notification, empowered NIOS with the power to test and certify its registered entrants up to academic, technical, or professional, pre-degree level courses. The Association of Indian Universities, Letter No. EV / 11 (354) / 91/25 July 1991 issued the Equivalence of NIOS Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.
