The scheme aims to provide scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to motivate their drop outs in eighth grade and to continue studies at secondary level. Scholarship of Rs. 12000 / – per year (Rs. 1000 / – per month) is provided to selected students every year for studies in classes from IX to XII in state government, government aided and local body schools. There is a scholarship quota for various states / UTs. Students whose parental income from all sources is Rs. Reservation is according to the norms of the state government. Scholarship students are selected through an examination conducted by the state governments. The scholarship is disbursed directly by the State Bank of India to the bank accounts of the students on a quarterly basis.
Students studying in “Kendriya Vidyalaya” and “Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya” are not entitled to scholarship under this scheme. Similarly, students studying in residential schools run by state government institutions where facilities like boarding, lodging and education are provided and students studying in private schools are also not eligible for scholarship under the scheme.

NMMS – Objective
Launched in May 2008, the NMMS scholarship aims to inspire bright and disadvantaged students to complete their secondary and higher secondary education to improve dropout rates from schools after Class 8. Every year, students in classes 9 to 12 appear for two levels. Selection Test at the state level to avail National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship for regular students of classes 9 to 12 of government schools.
NMMS – Award
NMMS offers a total of 100,000 scholarships to selected students at a rate of INR 12000 per year, ie INR 1000 per month. Under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship, the scholarship amount is paid by the State Bank of India (SBI) at one go. The amount is transferred directly to the students’ accounts through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). The number of scholarships allocated to each state and union territory is based on the enrollment of students in classes 7 and 8 and their population in the respective states. After registration on the NSP portal, the students of class 9 get one time scholarship amount of INR 12000 per year for the academic year.

eligibility criteria
Applicable only to meritorious and needy students of India, this NMMS Scholarship Scheme expects all applicants to fulfill the eligibility conditions so that selection test can be conducted to award the scholarship.
Candidates who wish to apply for this MCM scholarship must be regular students studying from class 8 with a score of at least 55% or equivalent grade after getting clear promotion from class 7.
Candidates should get education from government / local bodies / government aided schools.
To continue the scholarship in higher secondary school, a candidate must have obtained at least 60% marks in the class 10 board examination.
To continue the scholarship in class 12, the recipient of the scholarship award must get a clear promotion from class 11 on the first attempt itself with a score of 55% marks or equivalent. 5% relaxation in marks for students belonging to SC / ST category.
The annual family income of the candidates should not exceed INR 1.5 lakh.
Also, students who are enrolled in NVS, KVS, Sainik Schools and Private Schools are not eligible for NMMS scholarship.

Important dates
This NMMS scholarship is usually declared every year during the month of July and the deadline is in the month of October. This application period is temporary as it varies from year to year. This may change at the discretion of the scholarship provider next year.

How to apply for NMMS scholarship?
If you want to apply for NMMS, you must ensure that you meet all the eligibility criteria for this NMMS scholarship. Students can apply online form NMMS through National Scholarship Portal. Students are also informed about the availability of NMMS application form by the authorities of their schools. The last date for submission of the filled online NMMS application form is fixed by the State Nodal Officer every year. Students can also download the filled form from the official website or take it from their schools.
In the case of offline mode, students have to submit the NMMS application form filled with the required documents to the school in which a student is studying. Candidates whose forms are accepted will be able to submit the admit card from their respective schools a few days before the exam. Follow the instructions given below to successfully submit the NMMS application form:
Candidates can get the NMMS application form through online mode, and two attested hard copies of the application form along with the required documents should be submitted to the concerned school. The school head must forward the application to the schools to the nodal schools and keep a copy for the school records.

With the NMMS application form, students have to attach some documents. All documents must be verified by the school principal and parents. Check the required documents which should be attached with an NMMS application form-

Result
Once the students appear for the selection test, each state announces the list of students who have passed MAT and SAT with at least 40% marks in each examination. See below the conditions that are considered when selecting the final list of students for NMMS.
As per the rules, applicants should score at least 40% marks in each test, namely, MAT and SAT. However, there is a relaxation of marks for reserved categories. The cutoff mark for this MCM scholarship is 32% to get the scholarship benefit.
In addition, applicants should get at least 55% marks in the class 8 final examination. There is a relaxation of 5% marks for SC / ST students.
To avail NMMS, the candidates must fulfill all the eligibility conditions.
Exam pattern
Although NMMS is a central government scholarship scheme, its selection test is conducted by each state / UT for its respective students. These tests include a mental ability test and a Scholastic Aptitude Test whose guidelines have been set by the NCERT. Applicants must complete each exam in a maximum period of 90 minutes. However, children of special abilities are given some extra time to complete the tests.
